Giant Salamanders (Special Natural Monument)

Said to be able to survive being torn in half, giant salamanders are known locally as hanzaki ("han" for “half" and “zaki" for “tear"). They have become a kind of gross yet cute mascot for the area.

Here you’ll also find Hanzaki Daimyojin, a shrine dedicated to a giant salamander deity of legend. On August 8th, the shrine holds an annual Giant Salamander Festival that features giant salamander nebuta (parade floats) created by local youth groups.
