Legend has it that this hot spring was discovered by the high priest Ennin when he saw a white heron healing its wounded leg in the spring water. Hence, the hot spring is also known as "Heron Spring." Located in the center of the hot spring town, this foot bath is shaped like a foot— specifically the foot of local legend Sanbu Taro, a giant who is said to have walked all the way from Mimasaka to Kyoto in just three steps.
